Liesel meminger likes to read books. Hitler has taken over Germany so many books are not allowed. Because books are not allowed, Liesel has to steal books and if she gets caught she will be in big trouble. Liesel has read all of her books many times and she loves all of them. But what will happen if she is caught stealing books? Or if she is found reading books?
Liesel Meminger, a little girl, is being put into a foster home of Hans Hubberman and Rosa Hubberman. On her way to the foster home, on the train, her brother passes away. Her and her mother bury him at the next train stop and they make their way to the foster home for Liesel. When Liesel gets to the foster home, she was worried, scared and didn’t like it and frankly, just missed her mother and brother. She has to try adapting to their lifestyle, and with the war raging, she has to learn to be careful about what she says. She also loves to read, but again, because of the war, she has to steal books since Germany is burning all of their books. If she gets caught, she could be in lots of trouble. In school, she also has to learn to read and write but has trouble keeping up with the rest of her classmates. How will she keep up, get her books, move on and learn get to know how her foster parents are?
Liesel loves to read books. She does not have much access to books because she lives in Germany while Hitler is in control. Because there is not much access, Liesel has to steel them. If she gets caught there will be serious consequences. She steels the books because she has read her books so many times. What are the serious consequences? What will happen if she is caught reading?
Liesel is a young girl that is sent to a foster home at a young age due to her mothers inability to take care of her properly. Liesel soon learns to love her new home and finds a love within reading books. SHe soon begins to steal books, but what will happen if she gets caught? What are the possible consequences of doing so?
The characters conflict in the story is how she’s compelled to do almost anything for books. She burns herself while she’s saving a book from a fire (125). In this book the conflict is Man vs. Society and Man vs. Man. For Man vs. Society, the main character, Liesel is stealing books to save them while the society she lives in is trying to destroy them. For Man vs. Man, when Liesel steals a book from a bonfire and she knows someone saw her taking the book. She is the paranoid that the police will come for her or something of that sort and thinks every small noise is someone try to right her of what she has done.
The conflict in the story is that Liesel has to survive the hardships of a Nazi Germany lifestyle that involves bombings, and very little food to go around. She also has to deal with her father and mother hiding a Jew in their basement. Liesel can’t tell anyone about Max or her mother and father would be taken away. She loves books but since they are not allowed she will do anything to get her hands on them, even if that means stealing them from the mayor’s library. She one day rides to the Mayor’s house and sees the window to the library open. Liesel takes a risk and goes inside. As she walks along the shelves of books she decides to take one. She grabs a book and makes a run for it with Rudy following behind. After that Liesel starts taking more and more books.
The character’s conflict is to be safe in Nazi Germany. Molching gets bomb warnings frequently and Liesel needs to stay safe. Liesel’s family is keeping Max, a Jew in their home. They have to keep him safe and unknown or they would all get killed. Liesel is also getting very connected with books, so she feels the need to steal them very often. When she steals them, she tries very hard not to get caught. She is also fighting against herself to deal with her brother’s death and father’s disappearance. Liesel tries very hard to lead a normal life in Nazi Germany.
Liesel is living in modern 1940’s Germany, a time where Hitler was on the rise to power and Jews had to run for their lives to survive the Furher. Liesel and the Hubbermans, being the kind people they are decide to take in an old friend to live in their basement during this time of the war. Max Vandenberg, a German Jew. Liesel for a very long time has to live her life like any other little German girl as to make sure her friends don’t suspect anything. She has a lot of Self vs. Self-conflicts. Liesel contemplates not lying to her friends and possibly losing the only family she’s ever known. Or continue lying to the outside world as to not put her only family in jeopardy. She also has a lot of Self vs. Society conflicts in the fact that Liesel knew that Germans thought anyone who cared for Jews were considered to be German scum. She didn’t want people to think of her like that if she was ever found out. Liesel comes to love Max like family though and comes to understood that family comes before anything and everything.
Liesel is living in what was Nazi Germany and she is very intriged about learning and especially reading. But since her family is poor she doesn't have a good way to get books. So what she does is she steals books at any time she can, her first book was a gravediggers handguide. But she steals many more and hopes that she doesn't get into trouble with government officals like Hitler.
The character's conflict in the story is to try to stay safe during 1940's Germany, where Hitler was on rise to power. Liesile has to hide the fact that her family is hiding a Jew in their basement or else they could be at risk of being killed. Liesile could not trust anyone with this information, even her own best friend.

She came to Himmel Street as a foster kid, without any idea what she would be getting herself into for the future.
