  1. I think Liesel Meminger is strong, fun, ambitious, and intelligent. I feel this way about her because in The Book Thief, Liesel is always trying hard to succeed and, when her father hides Max Vandenburg in their basement to shield him from the Nazi’s she keeps it a secret. She keeps it a secret from her foster father’s daughter and even from her best friend Rudy. Also, Liesel is intelligent. When Liesel starts school, she doesn’t understand the concepts that they are learning. So, she with the help of her father, start to read The Grave Digger’s Handbook. When Liesel doesn’t understand a word her father paints it on the wall of their basement and, he helps her until she understands it. This shows Liesel is intelligent because, she enjoys reading and learning.

  2. Liesel is a small girl who lives on Himmel street in Germany with her foster parents. She traveled with her brother and her mom “both were skinny and pale. Both had sores on their lips” (24). “everything about her was undernourished. Wirelike shins. Coat hanger arms. She did not produce it easily, but when it came, she had a starving smile. Her hair was a close enough brand of German blond, but she had dangerous eyes. Dark brown” (31).

  3. Liesel Meminger is extremely talented. She has been through more than any average girl should be put through. She has stayed strong, and never given up. However, Liesel is also very sneaky. She has been keeping a secret from her faster parents about the crimes she has been committing. She has found a way to steal books, which may not seem like much. But with Hitler in control in Germany nothing is allowed. Liesel is also very intelligent; she is adapting quickly to the new language. She is also very sympathetic and thoughtful when she puts other before herself.

  4. Liesel is a poor girl who loves books and loves to steal them. Rudy called her, “book thief” after she stole a book (292). She is also very caring. When Max came to her house, he had a lot of bad dreams. Liesel comforted Max and they were “swapping nightmares” (220). She went and asked him, “What do you see when you dream like that?” (220). Max opened up and told her his dream and felt much better. Liesel is very good at adapting to the new environment. She made friends quickly. She is also very thoughtful and thinks about others before herself.

  5. I think Rudy is brave and very tough. I think he possesses these traits because of some of the events that happened in the book. After throwing a rock at his young Hitler Youth leader Franz Deustcher, he takes a knee to the rib cage and gets punched in the eye. Through all of that he still acted tough. Also, when he is asked when Hitler’s birthday is, he’s not afraid to say the wrong answer and joke around. Another reason why Rudy is brave is because he’s not afraid to steal the biggest potato from Mamer’s the local grocer. Even though, he gets caught he keeps his calm.

  6. Liesel is a brave, determined and intelligent girl. When she moved to Himmel Street she didn’t know that much from living a poor and under educated lifestyle. Once she moves in with the Hubbermans and learns to trust them she finds a new friend in her life. Books. She may not understand them at all in the beginning, but with the help of Papa (Hans) she motivates herself to read just as well as any other boy and girl of her age. Even when she continues a read, she finds a way to gather new reading material all on her own. It may not be the safest or most honest way to do it, but her hunger for books helps her to drive her away from any trouble that may come her way.

Max Vandenberg is a kind and brave, yet lonely soul. Max has survived so much in his lifetime; he lost his father as a young boy to the first war. His uncle died when he was only 13, and he had to leave his family once Hitler came in power just to survive the death camps. He has lost so much, yet he has found a reason to stay alive even when life is at its’ worst. With the help of Liesel Meminger, he learns to find a will to be alive through words and stories. With words he helps to let out the anguish of his past and look to the future. He may not have may friends, except for the Hubbermans, but he knows he should at least be thankful he isn’t dead. Max is a kind and brave man as well, for when Hans is discovered to be helping a Jew on the streets Max leaves. He does this because if Nazi officials come, the Hubbermans will be done for. So he leaves, knowing as soon as he goes out there he could face immediate death. It doesn’t matter to Max though, all he cares about is that the kind hearted family that protected him for almost a year will survives the war.
